Hedwig and The Angry Inch Worcester Theatre reviews
Brilliantly re-imagined, with a beating heart
The songs were intended to more closely hew to the plot line, resulting in a few being cut, moved, or having their lyrics altered. It all works incredibly. More character development is seen for all four Banks characters, especially Mr. Banks, which is a revelation. The performances were masterly, from Hedwig and The Angry Inch to the children (amazing! Jane is 9 years old!) and the supporting cast and chorus. I still remember my first Broadway musical - a revival of My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison (not Julie Andrews, unfortunately). Both numbers were intensely moving. They did leave "Feed the Birds" as is, and made unique use of Banks' theme [A Man Has Dreams, etc.], including the part where Bert flips it back on itself ["You have to grind grind grind at that grindstone..."]. I admit that a few songs, such as Sister Suffragette, were cut, but it didn't really affect the plot. Hedwig and The Angry Inch was the first musical my seven-year-old daughter experienced. We both loved it. We sat in the center orchestra, fifth row, at the Saturday matinee.
